Chinese tourists find info online

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (Pata) recommends that travel operators increase their internet service offerings to access the rapidly growing Chinese market.

According to a study by Pata and the Nielsen Co, nearly seven in 10 Chinese travellers use destination websites and six in 10 use online travel discussion forums to source information.

Time Travel to China's Cultural Revolution

For tourists to China the experience of Mao's rule is mostly just pages in a school history textbook. But now there's a way to get a pretty authentic taste of life during the Cultural Revolution: eat in a Commune Mess Hall restaurant.

These restaurants are apparently appearing throughout China, and the Guangzhou branch in the south of the country is getting some press attention. The restaurant staff dress in Red Guard uniforms, revolutionary songs form the musical soundtrack to your dining experience and propaganda posters adorn the walls. Fortunately, though, the food comes from more modern perspective.

With airlines rapidly expanding their networks and introducing new routes, hotel companies rushing to open more properties, and the government racing to improve tourism infrastructure before the Olympic Games next August, there's no doubt that tourism to China is on a serious upswing. China To Subsidize Small Airports To Boost Regional Air Travel

Beijing, China (AHN) - To boost regional air travel, China's Civil Aviation Authority is offering subsidies to small and medium-sized airports. The subsidy will help airports that handle less than 5 million passengers and service flights shorter than 600 kilometers, officials said.

Around 80 percent of China's 142 airports qualify for the subsidy, but it excludes air routes between Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and selected popular tourist destinations.

Fierce storm hits Chinese coast

Typhoon Krosa has crashed into the Chinese coast with torrential rains and powerful winds, forcing the evacuation of almost one and a half million people. Krosa made landfall in southeast China on Sunday night, near the border of densely populated Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, after killing five people in Taiwan. About 27,000 fishing boats have been recalled to port and holidays for emergency workers have been cancelled. Schools have been closed and airline flights cancelled in the port city of Wenzhou, in Zhejiang province.

Travel agencies slash prices of domestic group tours

BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's travel agencies had cut an average 30 percent off the price of most domestic group tours by Thursday, the fourth day of the National Day "golden week".CYTS, CITS, CCT and other major agencies were discounting trips to top tourist attractions, including Great Jiuzhaigou (Jiuzhai and Huanglong) in southwest China's Sichuan Province, Lijiang in Yunnan Province, Zhangjiajie in central China's Hunan Province, and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest, which depart after Thursday. Costs for tours abroad, particularly Japan and the Republic of Korea, fell by up to 1,000 yuan (132 U.S. dollars), according to prices offered by www.ctrip.com.
